Jakarta: Car owners should be aware of their car tire conditions, as this part has a crucial and vital roles to control the direction of the vehicle and directly in contact with the road surface.
During the rainy season, or on wet road, the tires should have great performance and condition, as it is related closely with safety and comfort when driving.
Head of the Autopit Shop in Kalimalang, East Jakarta, Mus Mulyadi, explained the safe condition of tires to be used on the road. All tire products have been equipped with the tread wear indicator (TWI). TWI is the final limit of usage, with the height (thickness) of 1.6 mm. The TWI is presented with a triangle logo on the car's outer wall.
To maintain optimal performance of these tires, Mus has advised to implement regular rotations of car tires to ensure that these tires will be used out at the same time, as the weight of the car is not evenly distributed on these four tires.
He also explained how to correctly rotate the tires, which is transferring the position of the two front tires to the rear every 20,000 kilometers. However, it should be remembered that tire rotations should only be conducted with the tires within the same sizes. For different sizes of tires, such as those on sport cars, the sizes differ between the front and rear tires. So, it is not advised to implement any rotations.
It should be known that the tires that have exceeded the usage limit will only be capable of diverting 4 liters of water per second at a 60 kilometers per hour. The rest is not diverted as it makes the tires to be above the water surface. Such condition may cause the car to be uncontrollable, or even losing traction, especially during braking and switching lanes. This is usually called as the aquaplane.
He also highlighted that if the tires have passed the usage limit, users should be careful and pay close attention to the car speed, in efforts to anticipate any danger before replacing these tires.
